Budworth Sailing Club

Glorious sunshine and a warm southerly breeze greeted 35 sailors including 23 visitors to Budworth Mere for the final event in the Topper NW Traveller Series 2006.

The race team headed by Graham Tinsley had a hectic day moving marks around to ensure beats and also to ensure that it was all over (!!!!) by 4.00pm to watch England’s date with Portugal.

Race 1 Needed some fine adjustments to the start line but the tweaking paid off with only individual recall required by the eagle eyed OOD. Andrew Brown, (Budworth) sped off to an early lead which he held almost throughout the 3 lap, 9 beat course. The wind was swinging and funnelling down the course and a number of different boats including Charlotte Greenhalgh, (Elton), broke through on a lift but only later to be headed and for Andrew to regain the lead. Andrew took line honours from Charlotte and Jack Hopkins, (Delph).

Showing complete impartiality Mr Tinsley then told the AOD that his daughter, Hannah Wilcock, was OCS after finishing third on the water!

Elliot Hanson (Redesmere) put in a storming performance in race 2 to lead for most of the race. Andrew Brown took a little time to break through from third place and then set about chasing Elliot who he managed to pass on the penultimate downwind leg.

Andrew scored his second race win to take the event with Elliot second and Sam Watson (Nantwich), a confident and often quite vocal competitor! third.

Race 3 was dominated by the three National Squad girls from Elton. Anna Brookes, Emily Jackson and Charlotte Greenhalgh steadily pulled away from the fleet and had their own race. Anna looked to have things well under control but a cruel windshift 20 metres from the line meant that the penultimate mark positions were reversed and Charlotte won from Emily with Anna third. Andrew Dawson, (Winsford) sailed well to take fourth place.

• 2nd Charlotte Greenhalgh, (Elton)
• 3rd Emily Jackson (Elton)

Andrew Brown also won the NW Topper Traveller Series 2006 which is held at nine venues around the NW and attracted a total entry of 95 boats
