October Mere Views

October 18th, 2007 by: Emma Hackney

Dear Club Member,

RACING SCENE
The year is racing past and we’re now back into main points… Not long now until the days shorten and we’re into the Autumn series…. Just a reminder that the Autumn series is open to sailors from outside the club (so long as they are sailing club boats) at the bargain price of £15 for the full series (Sunday 4th November – Sunday 16th December inclusive). So why not spread the word about the pleasures of sailing around Budworth to your friends and show off why we’re members here?? Further details can be obtained from your racing secretary Mark Philpot.

Also don’t forget the final Champion Helm event is Saturday November 3rd, starting with the pursuit race at high noon. This event has been well supported this year and competition if fierce – so come down and join in – its all down to the last race on the last day….

SOCIAL SCENE
For those of you that didn’t go to the Dinner Dance this weekend you missed another PPP treat!!!! (Pauline Penny Production…) Great venue, tasty food, brilliant band and fantastic company – no one could ask for more…. Other than the lucky winner of the evening’s raffle who walked (well staggered) away with 6 bottles of high class plonk and spirits….  Many, many thanks must go to Pauline for all her hard work – and you’ll be glad to know that after a couple of glasses of wine in between courses she’s agreed to keep PPPs going next year.

Talking of PPP – the next great event is the Prize Giving / Laying up Supper. This has traditionally been a joint fireworks / prize giving night – but sadly due to the ever increasing power of the Health and Safety Man (and more importantly the Club Insurers) we are no longer able to light up the Mere with a dazzling display (of fire works…) by your Commodore. So for the first time this year the date has moved by a week to Saturday 10th November. Not to be fazed by the date change PPP has come up with a fantastic plan to ensure that the evening goes with a swing….

The party will start with opening of the bar and prize giving at 6.30 with food at 7.30 and entertainment to follow. All members and guests are welcome for both events, but those planning on staying for food and the evening entertainment MUST buy a ticket in advance from Pauline. Tickets for the evening are just £10 for adults and £6 for juniors under the age of 16. It’s Helena’s Hotpot and afters to eat (vegetarian option available at time of booking ticket). Full details of the entertainment will be made clear on the night, but basically there is to be an inter-fleet challenge so make sure you catch up with your fellow fleet sailors to put together a team (minimum 4 people – no maximum). There will be a number of challenges including creative, strategic, physical (no latex allergies…….) and a scavenge hunt.

This sounds a fantastic evening and one to put in your diaries NOW – I’m intrigued to see what Pauline’s planning with latex after her supply of tin foil last Saturday….

AGM
We are fast approaching the AGM. This will be held at the Club House on Wednesday 7th November at 7.30pm. The bar will be open before the start – and also when we’re ready for an interval. Notices for the AGM will be sent out soon and any items you wish to raise should be sent in advance to the Committee (via Nigel Harrison you Club Secretary). The Club is your Club and this is the best time to express your views and give the Committee Feedback, and find out about our Plans for the future.

There are also several Committee Places becoming available this year – a list for nominations is now up in the Club House. BSC is lucky in its strength of Committee and dedication of Committee Members – we can not thank them enough for all they do – but don’t be phased by that – a post involves as much or as little time as you can give – some posts are held jointly at present (such as Junior Training) and this is being encouraged to widen the input into the roles, and other posts are more seasonal (such as Handbook). If you do feel that you can give a little time to helping run the Club please consider becoming a Committee Member and chat with any of the current committee members for further info.

Apologies for there not being much proper news from “on the water” but holidays and family commitments have kept us away too much lately.  If anyone has any news they’d like passing on or has results from events they’d like to boast about let me know and I’ll do a short addendum.

Hope to see you Sunday
Best Regards,
Emma
