More October Mere Views
October 24th, 2007 by: Emma HackneyDear Member,
Well my previous email had you emailing allsorts of gossip and newsworthy events through for an update – so here we go with a selection. There’s lots going on so please try to scan through to the end if your busy….
Andrew Brown keeps on making BSC proud!!
Former Topper, and now Laser Radial Sailor, Andrew Brown isn’t just a fantastic sailor, as can be seen by his world ranking and his Mum and Dad’s sagging mantle piece, but now it’s been confirmed that he’s the Country’s top “One to Watch Young Athlete”. Andrew recently attended the SportsAid Gala Ball at London’s Hilton Park Lane Andrew was presented with the 2007 SportsAid One To Watch Award by triple Olympic medallist and Skandia Team GBR Finn sailor Ben Ainslie. A panel comprising five of the country’s leading national newspaper journalists selected Andrew ahead of some 2,000 SportsAid-supported young athletes nationwide.

Prize Giving and Laying Up Supper.
Thought I’d get a plug in near the top……
The Prize Giving / Laying up Supper is on Saturday 10th November.
The party will start with opening of the bar and prize giving at 6.30 with food at 7.30 and entertainment to follow. All members and guests are welcome for both events, but those planning on staying for food and the evening entertainment MUST buy a ticket in advance from Pauline (penny.carl@btinternet.com or reply to this email and I’ll pass it on). Tickets for the evening are just £10 for adults and £6 for juniors under the age of 16. It’s Helena’s Hotpot and afters to eat (vegetarian option available at time of booking ticket). Full details of the entertainment will be made clear on the night, but basically there is to be an inter-fleet challenge so make sure you catch up with your fellow fleet sailors to put together a team (minimum 4 people – no maximum). There will be a number of challenges including creative, strategic, physical (no latex allergies…….) and a scavenge hunt.
This sounds a fantastic evening a- not one to be missed – so whilst your thinking about it email Pauline for tickets in case you forget later…
A bit of a party…
Just to let you know that we raised £2,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support at the 1 September do which was matched by Mike’s work (ABB consulting) making a total of (not difficult maths here…) £4,000. In total Mike raised £5,000 including our £2,000 which was all doubled to make £10,000. Not bad for a bit of a walk and a bit of a party!
(And for those of you who didn’t manage to make it you missed a cracking night – Budworth and friends partying at their best!! If you get the opportunity to see Elephant Juice – RS200 Fleet Captain Rob Murphy’s band – playing make sure you go – hopefully we’ll get them back to Budworth again to lift the roof once more!!!)
First Aid Training
As part of several RYA qualifications its necessary to have a First Aid certificate that is RYA compliant. In the past Club Members have organised their own training, but the Club recognises that as well as helping Members achieve their qualifications it is also in the Club’s interest to have as many people around who know what to do in an emergency. We’re therefore looking at organising training for Club Members either at the Club or locally. Attached are advertisements for the two available courses (half and full day). For RYA qualifications the full day course is required. Please contact Gill Kenyon for further details or to book a course by email on thehclub@hotmail.com or by phone 077989-36004.
Power Boat Training
Following on from the success of previous courses the club is again hosting Craig Hinkins to run a Power Boat Level 1 & 2 Course on Saturday 10th and Sunday 17th November (both days have to be attended to acquire the PB 1&2 Qualification). I’ve heard so many good accounts of the course I’ve lost count, and even those who thought they knew how to drive a boat have come away impressed. For further details please contact Craig Hinkins direct 07703 176447 / hinkins6@msn.com.
Classic and Vintage Racing Dinghy Association Nationals
Over the August Bank Holiday weekend the CVRDA held it’s Nationals event at Clywedog in Mid Wales. This is a superb sailing location with good winds in a truly spectacular location. Held over three days this event attracts Classic designs with boats over 25 years old and designed before 1965 and Vintage boats (older than 1955 I think). The event attracts a range of classes from Merlins (No 1. among them), Hornets, Pegasus, GP14’s, Graduates, OKs, Finns, Albacore’s and Flying fifteens and National 12’s, and in past years International Canoe’s. Boats come from all over the UK
Ray and Jackie Bailey with their GP14 2629 made the trek, as did Hugh and Ellie Devereux in GP14 7358. And apart from the normal rivalry between these two helms, they represented Budworth to their best. Overall Ray came 5th and Hugh came 10th out of a field of 30 competitors. Ray also took home the trophy for 1st Classic boat.
Great weather, great boats, fun competition and good company, what more could anyone ask from a Bank Holiday weekend.
For more information on CVRDA and for other events visit www.cvrda.org <http://www.cvrda.org> . If you are interested in joining in next year, then contact Hugh Devereux. Snipes and Firefly’s would certainly qualify…
Rescue Boats and Keys
A plea goes out from those who have a full set of club keys to ODs of the day to make sure they have keys in plenty of time (in other words please stop phoning around last thing the night before….). They are held by all Committee Members and Class Captains as well as many other long standing members of the club. In case of doubt all Club Members can obtain gate keys and Club House keys from Steve Kelham for a small none refundable deposit. The Club House Key also opens the OD box and bosuns shed. At present an abloy key is needed for the starting Computer but shortly this may be removed as the key is now obsolete and can no longer be cut. The rescue containers all open with the same key (a funny brass double sided comb affair) which again many Committee members hold – but as a last resort a spare key is kept in the galley. If you do borrow this key please make sure you return it. A plea goes out to the mystery keeper of the first key that was left there this year to return it anomalously to the drawer.
Also a quick reminder that the rescue boats are there to keep an eye on sailing and offer assistance when rescue is needed. It is important that all in the boat have on buoyancy aids so they in turn don’t need rescuing if things go wrong, and that the boat isn’t used for joy riding or giving friends trips around the lake to view the heron’s…. Abuse of the boats uses up valuable fuel, upsets Marbury Wardens when speeding boats cause wash, and reduce the assistance that can be given in an emergency if the boat is packed with children and spectators…
Finally on this matter please look after the boats and treat the engines with respect. In the case of fault please make sure you make the OD aware of this and ODs please inform our Boat Officer Rob Ditchburn of the problem so it can be fixed and save that frustrating swapping around of boats at the beginning of the day when one just won’t start….
Sorry to harp on about this but you never know when you will need help from the rescue.
Congratulations if you made it through to the end and look forward to seeing you at the laying up supper to see what Pauline’s planning…..
Regards,
Emma
