A Victory win for Budworth at the 12hr National team event

Update - many pictures of this event are now available here - with many thanks to Jo Rutherford of Southport Sailing Club.

Budworth Sailing Club’s junior team cleaned up on Saturday at the 12hr National event hosted by Southport Sailing Club. They won the 12 hr race trophy for being 1st place team, the Southport junior trophy for being the leading GP, and finally they won the Rogerson Trophy for the 1st fastest two laps under 18. They completed 64 laps and were closely followed by Royal Windermere with 63 laps and consistently kept that lap difference throughout the race.

The wind stayed consistently steady throughout the day, with some unexpected gusts which were quite strong. Twenty eight teams entered with high standards of sailing that gave for a very competitive race.

The Budworth junior team consisted of Andrew Brown Topper World Champion, Tom Ditchburn who sails a Snipe and GP14, Katie Greenwood a Topper and GP14, Ryan Penny a GP14, Alex Sharp a Snipe and Will Williams a Snipe. This team came together with different abilities from different dinghies but with practice and team togetherness what an achievement had by all. Every person on the team gave 100% to what was a thoroughly enjoyable day.

The whole team would like to say a big thank you to our sponsor’s ‘Preston Audi’, and Ben Ditchburn as Team leader, ably assisted by John Greenwood and Harry Brown, because without their support the day would not have been possible.

Ice Breaker 2008

Posted on March 9th 2008, by Graham Tinsley

The 2008 season kicked off in fine style, sunshine and a nice Force 3 and a good turn out of 18 boats (2 Fireballs, 6 RS200, 4 Snipes, 4 Lasers, 1 Mirror,1 Firefly, no GP’s) .

OD Noble set some interesting starts, with courses that encompassed all parts of sailing ; along beat , 2 short reaches and a long run back to ensure no class of boat was particularly advantaged. Race one went to Tinsley-Cowan followed by Taylor-Taylor in their RS200’s whilst the fit again Wilcock(all alone) came in 3 rd in his Laser.
The second race saw the Lasers dominate with Harry Brown winning by one second from Wilcock. 3rd and improving quickly in their new Snipe was Phil and Emma Hackney.
The 3rd Race saw a number of capsizes as the teams tired and were set a 4 lap race by OD Noble. This time the Snipes dominated with Hackney-Hackney finding his form and winning the race by 11 secs from the RS of Tinsley-Cowan (who recovered from a first beat pit stop !) whilst Paalman and Ditchburn got their best result of the day with a 3rd a further 4 seconds back. Nice and close !.

Overall it was good to see that no one fleet dominated. Tinsley-Cowan took the title in their RS200 followed by Hackney-Hackney in a Snipe with Tony Wilcock(all alone) in his Laser. Lets hope the rest of the season is this much fun.
