Budworth Sailing Club

 The final round of the EARLY Series was held last Saturday, and what a day! Good weather with a brisk north-westerly force 3-4, gusting 5, and some excellent courses set by OD John Booth allowing planing reaches the length of the Mere!

With 38 out of the max possible 39 races sailed, we have 13 qualifiers, and congratulations go to Ray & Jackie Bailey (GP14) for their Series win from Roger Barnes (Snipe) second, and Ian White (Laser), third.

Prizes will be awarded at the Laying-up Supper in Early November. The LATE Series, which starts on Sat 21st July , has 14 rounds, 42 races, and finishes the first week end in November.

Budworth entered a team of 8 under 20s in the Southport SC Junior 12 hour race on Saturday 30th June, sailing a GP14. A total of 20 boats were entered comprising several GP14s, Enterprises and a few Bosuns.

In a gusty South Easterly force 4 and driving rain, Budworth’s Helms and Crews swapped approximately every 2 hours, ensuring a continually refreshed team to cope with the challenging conditions.

Budworth were challenged from the start by a strong Winsford Flash GP14 team who put on an early lead. Though lying second for several hours, Budworth were then challenged by a strong team in a West Lancs YC Enterprise, which sailed in to second place and then challenged Winsford in the closing stages of the race. At the same time Budworth were also working hard to fend off competition from Bolton SC and Royal Windermere YC.

Despite the very strong competition, the Budworth team secured an excellent Third Place, with no penalties, and gratefully accepted The Lake Licensee’s Cup from the OD at the end of the race.
