Ice Breaker 2008

Posted on March 9th 2008, by Graham Tinsley

The 2008 season kicked off in fine style, sunshine and a nice Force 3 and a good turn out of 18 boats (2 Fireballs, 6 RS200, 4 Snipes, 4 Lasers, 1 Mirror,1 Firefly, no GP’s) .

OD Noble set some interesting starts, with courses that encompassed all parts of sailing ; along beat , 2 short reaches and a long run back to ensure no class of boat was particularly advantaged. Race one went to Tinsley-Cowan followed by Taylor-Taylor in their RS200’s whilst the fit again Wilcock(all alone) came in 3 rd in his Laser.
The second race saw the Lasers dominate with Harry Brown winning by one second from Wilcock. 3rd and improving quickly in their new Snipe was Phil and Emma Hackney.
The 3rd Race saw a number of capsizes as the teams tired and were set a 4 lap race by OD Noble. This time the Snipes dominated with Hackney-Hackney finding his form and winning the race by 11 secs from the RS of Tinsley-Cowan (who recovered from a first beat pit stop !) whilst Paalman and Ditchburn got their best result of the day with a 3rd a further 4 seconds back. Nice and close !.

Overall it was good to see that no one fleet dominated. Tinsley-Cowan took the title in their RS200 followed by Hackney-Hackney in a Snipe with Tony Wilcock(all alone) in his Laser. Lets hope the rest of the season is this much fun.

A Budworth Rota Sailing Event

Mirror news and Gossip

Posted on March 1st 2008, by Graeme Bristow

What a lot is happening.

Junior Training: The club will be prioritising mirror race training this year so please support this. The mirrors are the only junior class where we can teach team work, spinnaker handling and introduce young members who feel more comfortable sailing with someone else in the boat. It also helps the club feed the adult classes.

Training Info Evening: As described below, please come along. I’m going to hear Andrew Brown who could well be the next Ben Ainslie so what an opportunity to hear him talk.

Armada Mirror: I now have looked over the mirror, it’s in my garage but will soon be at Budworth for you to borrow and try out. It will be out every Sunday morning as part of the training fleet.

Coaches: 6 of us spent last weekend studying and practicing for our RYA club race coaches certificate. I was amazed at what we learned and practiced. We now have an enviable team and I believe a unique opportunity for club members to gain outstanding coaching.

Help: In running the courses we would welcome your help on Sunday mornings. It will be a fantastic opportunity for you to see your child develop and learn some useful skills for your own sailing. If you are able please let Fraser Kerr or myself know or just turn up and lend a hand.

Boats: Key to success for me is having all the Mirrors at the club in full working order early in the season. The season is just 2 weeks away so now would be an excellent time to dust it off, fix all the things that need fixing and get it down there. I will help where ever I can on this be it gluing, screwing, setting up, trailing etc to get them down at the club.

Well that’s all from me - with you we can make the mirror fleet something special this year. My aspiration is lots of mirror sailing, training and kids enjoying and learning.
