Laser Update - 1st Aug 2010

Posted on August 1st 2010, by the Webmaster

Dear All

The Wednesday and Sunday series results have been updated, its great to see the number qualifiers increase. You only need eight results to qualify and you earn a discard for every race above qualification. With four weeks to go and four races a day , there is still every oportunity to qualify.

The racing was certainly tigtht today with both Rod and Steve, both having more than their fair share of luck and a bit of bad luck in the last race.

For the Wednesday evening sailors dont forget the last night pursuit race followed by a curry buffet at the club. Its ticket only, ticket are available from Bill Kenyon details below:

Wednesday Laser Update

Posted on June 17th 2010, by the Webmaster

What a good turnout this Wednesday with 9 boats on the water. Quite a challenging breeze (force 3-4), but still some very competative racing and some excelent reaches. If only I could have stayed upright (incompetence on my part, attempting to go the wrong way around F after leading the fleet around the wrong windward mark - there were two dan buoys in my defence). Anyway everyone sailed the same course so the results stand.

Race 2 was good fun aswell, well done Ted. Hopefully an RS wont park on the finish line next time.

On a more serious note, dont forget commodores weekend, on Saturday 18th  I would really like to get at least two teams entered for the Okells cup.

I will be press ganging volunteers for the slipway nearer the time.

Cheers

Hugh

Laser News June 2010

Dear All

Great turn out wednesday night for two short races. Harry disapeared into the distance of the first race, but there was plenty of place changing further down the fleet. Second race ended up with an upwind downwind course, which ended up a very close race with tony and Dave taking first and second.

Please see updated results, please note you must sign on for the correct race otherwise I will have to discard your result for the race - you have been warned.

This weekend is the commodores weekend and it would be great to see you out; racing starts at 13:00 on the saturday and I would like to enter as many teams as we can (3 boats to make up each team). There is racing planned for Sunday afternoon also.

Work on the slip will start Tuesday 29th June and will render the slip out of action for at least three weeks.

Cheers

Hugh

Budworth Laser Open

Posted on May 8th 2010, by the Webmaster

Budworth Sailing club was pleased to host the 2010 Laser Open Meeting on Sunday 9th May, with 31 lasers racing,  the day was a real challenge with a variable and shifty north easterly resulting in some close racing and the positions flipping throughout all of the races. Our congratulations go to Andy Brown (Budworth) who won the event, no easy feat when we had to go to ‘count back’ to decide the top three. Thanks to all of the budworth sailors who turned out, although it would have been nice to out number the visitors given we have 54 boats in the fleet. Hopefully we will see some more out next year.

Dave Nicholson made the prizes as did Tony Taylor as the first non placed Budworth boat.
Well done.

Top Class Budworth Sailor!

Congratulations Andrew!

Budworth sailor Andrew Brown will represent UK at World Championships
andrew_brown_selected.jpgBudworth regular Andrew Brown has qualified to represent the UK in the World and European Championships this summer.

The 18-year-old finished a six-event qualifying series on the south coast at the weekend in second place, good enough to compete in the Laser Standard Youth World Championships at Hayling Island in Hampshire and the Youth Europeans in Poland.

And because of an excellent result in the Royal Yachting Association Youth Nationals two weeks ago, the Budworth Sailing Club star has also been invited to represent the UK in an event in Holland next month.

In the Youth Nationals, the A level student was the second ‘true’ youth - under 19s - and first English boat, with the racing available to view in replay mode on tractrac.com.

He then participated in the RYA invitation-only Spring Series in a small fleet of 11 boats that included Paul Goodison, Britain’s Olympic gold medalist and world champion, together with the remainder of the Olympic squad.

The event was used as a test bed for the 2012 Olympic sail area - testing the wind conditions and how different areas of the sea could be viewed by spectators.

Andrew Brown is Budworth’s most successful junior sailor

Dear All

Another great Sunday sailing, sunshine and a force 3 straight down the lake. It was great to see eight boats on the water, with very close racing on all three races (glad I was not OD on the final race of the day). Those who have not been down yet, not sure what is keeping you away. I look forward to seeing you down at the club.

Regards
Hugh

Laser News - March 2010

Posted on March 29th 2010, by the Webmaster

Dear All

We are now week three into the season and it was great to see thirteen boats out on the water this weekend. I was lucky to get out this weekend for my first sail in fairly lively, but manageable conditions and I can assure you its not too cold to start the season.

We have a few new members to the fleet who I would like to welcome, namely:

Claire Nolan, Simon Coppock, Justin and Gwen Heap, Peter Wilkinson, James Hazelwood

We are now the largest fleet with over 50 boats. I look forward to seeing all of the fleet out on the water this year.

In terms of rigs I am happy for people to interchange rigs, if it means they will get out on the water. However, no handicap will be applied and the decision on which rig to use needs to be for the whole days racing.

I will be publishing a dinghy park plan shortly to enable the correct allocation of berths. Prime locations will be allocated to those who sail regularly.

If anyone is interested in buying new sails I am planning to try and get a deal from Laser. Failing this Tony Taylor has a number for a supplier in the south who will sell new rolled sails for £250 each (collect only). In order to get the best deal I will need to know how many people are interested, please mail by return if you are.

Some of you may have noticed that the laser slip can be a little tricky to use. I have agreed with the committee that we will be able to carry out improvements (cast a new wider less steep slipway). As this will require calm conditions and reasonable weather I would like to carry the work out in June. It will take about three weeks (working on a Saturday) so I need some volunteers to assist. Can you please indicate whether you will be able to assist in June? Exact dates will be confirmed later.

Prizegiving & Laying Up Supper

The laying up supper and prize giving takes place on Saturday and it would be good to have as many Laser sailors there as we can muster. It will be a good night for everybody and a chance to catch up in a way that doesn’t happen when sailing. The prize winners for each series should be there to collect their prize and they are listed below for completeness. The prize list includes the first 4 in the Main Points, which includes the two Tonys who both qualified, (special well done) and silver fleet winners in the Summer Series and Wednesday Night. All prize winners are in bold below.
