Mere Views - December 2009

Local boy makes good
This quote from the latest RYA newsletter says it all:
Roger Allen from Warrington was presented with one of the RYA’s most prestigious awards, an RYA Award, on 19 November by HRH the Princess Royal, President of the RYA, at the organisation’s annual awards ceremony held in London.

Well done Roger, who aside from his work for the RYA has for very many years been a great asset to Budworth SC.
See our separate post for more details!

Autumn Series Finale
At the point I’m writing this the Autumn series has one day left to run - that’s three whole races to anyone on the verge of qualifying (7 races needed if sailing goes ahead on Sunday, 6 if not). This year has been pretty good. Apart from one day when the OD had to undertake heroic actions to save the rescue boats let alone the handful of sailors, racing has taken place every Sunday and pretty good racing at that.

Dawn will be preparing baked potatoes and chilli for lunch and by the look of the forecast it will need to be a hot one! Metcheck shows a brilliant westerly force 4. I won’t mention what it says in the other columns…

Racing will be followed by the series prize-giving in the bar. If you’re not sailing but think you’re up for a prize turn up early in case of a last minute race cancellation - worst case you’ll get to watch some good racing.

Boxing Day Open
As usual the club is holding its Boxing Day open meeting on Saturday 26th December. There’ll be two races (first start 12 noon), bacon butties, mince pies, mulled wine, good company etc. etc. so make it a date. If you don’t fancy sailing, volunteers are always welcome to help with race organisation, marshalling visitors or serving food and drink.

Warrington Dolphins will be down first thing for their winter swim and will be leaving as we start racing so please don’t block anyone in. They will park along the back fence. If you bring a trailer (or see a visitor looking for somewhere to put one), trailers must be stored in the dinghy park not the car park and visiting boats should be rigged at the front of the club - it could be pretty busy.

Winter Working Parties
The winter working parties will commence on Sunday 24th January and run till the last Sunday in February. There’s a heap of work to do and this year Property Managers Steve Hubbard Roger Barnes aim to post a list of jobs early so you can pick something to suit your talents and come down prepared.

Tool Loan

For the working parties we’d like to stock the new workshop container with a selection of tools. There are some issues associated with the club “owning” tools, so If you’ve any spare stuff your are prepared to leave at the club (and maybe lose, so really spare stuff) Steve and Roger will be most grateful.

Unclaimed Prizes
Every prizegiving we end up with a few unclaimed prizes. In the past these have been stacked in the bar store to await collection but have been known to stay for years. Henceforth unclaimed prizes will be “recycled”, either as new prizes or used by the club, so if you haven’t picked up that main points prize yet get onto Graham urgently. After the Autumn series I’ll try to remember to publish a full list of prizewinners.

Winter Boat Storage
This is your annual reminder that the club expects members to remove their boats from the dinghy park during the close season. Ideally please remove your boat on or before New Year’s Day. If you need to leave it you must pay a small winter storage fee to David Alexander (who will have reminded regulars already). Some members find this rule onerous, but as the majority don’t its only fair for everyone to “take or pay”.

And finally
This might be the last Mere Views you receive. If you don’t renew by the year end you’re officially not a member any more. If you do renew promptly David Alexander will thank you for not making him chase you. I think I’ve removed any known resignees from the email circulation list so if you receive this in error, do let me know.

Ian.
