Junior Classes
The Junior Classes sailed at Budworth are Optimists, Mirrors and Toppers. The club currently has 18 Optimist Class members. Optimists are designed for children since they are safe and straightforward for beginners to use but technically challenging for the experienced sailors. They are easily transported on top of any car being only 2.31 metres long, 1.13 metres wide and weighing 35kg. Second hand prices start at a few hundred pounds - and Optimists hold their value

The Mirror is the classic family sailing dinghy, ideal for both cruising and racing. Many sailors have started their careers in the Mirror, first sailing with their parents then with other juniors. Some have gone on to be champions and even win Olympic medals! For youngsters with aspirations to race at the highest level, the Mirror is a recognised RYA Junior (Pathway) Training Class. The club currently has 11 Mirror Class members and has recently received a loan boat from the Mirror Class Association as part of the Armada scheme.

Whether just messing about in boats, learning to sail, flat out blasting or competitive racing, there are so many reasons for choosing the Topper. It requires little maintenance, is easily rigged in a matter of minutes, is rugged and safe for beginners and an exciting race boat too as your skills develop AND it is car-toppable! The ideal weight for sailing a Topper is between 50kg and 70 kg. There is no ideal age - anything from 9 to 90! BSC currently has 13 Topper Class members.

Budworth Sailing Club believes that a strong junior membership is the key to the continued success of the club. The club has successfully established a core number of skilled parents who freely contribute their time and energy towards promoting a fun and safe environment within which children can learn and enjoy everything that sailing has to offer.
