45 Junior Boats arrived at Budworth on bank holiday Monday and were greeted by a F3 westerly breeze which steadily increased during the day.
. In the capable hands of race officer Mike Guest and his band of helpers and scorers, the juniors enjoyed 3 races around the mere as the wind increased all day. Rescue crews were kept on their toes as some of the Juniors enjoyed turning there boats upside down and going for a swim!
.
The handicap fleet got away to a clean start. Sam Hall in his laser lead the way , took line honours and won the race from the 30 boats handicap fleet comprising of Lasers/radials and 4.7s , Toppers , a 420, Hobie405 and an Rs tera. Lucy Yates in her Topper came 2nd with fellow Topper sailor Andrew green in 3rd.
Very close racing took place in the 15 strong Optimist fleet. Budworth’s Tom Joesbury lead from start to finish. Hannah Bristow sailed an excellent race to hold off the challenge of Max Spedding from Dee to finish 2nd.
Race 2 .
After a lovely pasta lunch (thanks Sally ) the wind increase for the Race 2 and it was the laser radials that dominated the handicap fleet. Tom Keegan, Christopher Wheeler, and Becca Cox finishing 1st , 2nd and 3rd respectively pushing the toppers of Andrew Green and Lucy Yates into 4th and 5th
.
Again Tom Joesbury lead the 2nd Optimist race, but the fleet was very bunched up and some very close exciting racing took place. There were numerous place changes in this race and plenty of bailing as the wind picked up. Round the penultimate mark Max Spedding gained water on Tom Joesbury and took the lead only to loose it again down the run to Tom, as Tom sail to windward of him. However it was Josh Dawson who sailed a great race, building on last weeks performance at Winsford, showed fantastic speed on the last run to sailed past both of them to leeward, to take first place. Well done Josh. Tom deciding that he had finished when he hadn’t, dropped from 2nd round the last mark to 5th at the finish. Max took 2nd . James Clementson 3rd and Haydn Griffiths 4th.
Race 3
As the wind increased further it took its toll on the tiring juniors with 19 out of the 45 failing to complete or start the final race.
Tom Keegan set the pace again in the Handicap race but was just beaten by Topper sailor Andrew Green on handicap. Alex Davies had the best race of his day and finished 3rd in his topper..
Tom Joesbury made amends for his mishaps in the 2nd race and sailed away in the last Opi race, never to be threatened for the lead. Max Spedding showed good consistency and took 2nd place again. Hannah Bristow and James Clementson had a good battle in this one for 3rd .. James had to take a penalty for a port and starboard incident with Hannah,. opening the door for Hannah to take 3rd.. Hannah showed that the boys should watch out, sailing well all day, she’s stepped up a gear and will be a force to be reckoned with as the season progresses.
There were some notable performances from the Budworth Juniors. Well done to Izzy Bristow and Ruorri Kerr the youngest competitors both 8 years old who did extremely well in the testing conditions. .Best improvers included, Hannah and Josh, in the Budworth Junior racing squad and Mathew Leckie, in the Budworth Junior intermediate squad, .who will surely be moving up to the racing squad soon.

Budworth Juniors take 3 out of the 4 top places at Winsford flash NW Travellers junior event.
A few clouds and a nice breeze greeted us at Winsford on Saturday 25th April .After a bit of rain, just to make sure parents got wet while they help rig boats, it turned out a nice sunny day with a very shifty F2-F3 blowing from the clubhouse down the flash.
8 visiting Optimists took part along with 11 Toppers and 9 Lasers.
The Oppies had a great day with 3 races that were all very close with lots of place changing.Tom Joesbury lead for most of the first race only to loose out on the last beat. While Tom covered Max Spedding from Dee in second Alex Joesbury kept his concentration, took a few good windshifts and pulled through from 3rd to win by 2 boat lengths from Tom. Max Speding 3rd and Budworth’s Josh Dawson 4th.
Tom Joesbury again lead for most of the 2nd race, only to get caught out on the wrong side of a big winshift allowing Max Speding, who had sailed a great race, from being over the line and last, to take the win .Josh Dawson, who was having the best race of his day and was only boat lengths behind the first two all race, came in 3rd .
The final race was very close with the lead changing up the last beat 4 times with 4 boats in contention for first place up until the very last 100 Metres . Alex Joesbury won by no more than 6″ from his brother Tom in 2nd .Bobby Hewitt last years runner up from Leigh and Lowton in 3rd.
Congratulations to Alex Joesbury who wins his first ever open event.
The Oppies also had a chance to see some of the youth talent in the laser classes on show. Having now move on from their topper sailing Stuart Brown won the laser class representing Budworth. closely followed by Elliot Hanson from Redesmere another Ex topper champ in 2nd.
