About Us

Budworth Mere is one of the most attractive inland waters in the North of England. We are located near Northwich in the heart of Cheshire. This is close to the motorway network and very easily accessed from Warrington, South Manchester and Knutsford as well as from Northwich.

The club has a perennially strong membership of around 500 and racing turnouts are among the highest in the area.

This is helped by the club’s policy of accepting only boats of its adopted fleets (see menu to left) and concentrating on class racing. The range of boats adopted reflect the needs of club members and the water we race on and there is something for everyone.

We sail every Sunday from the beginning of March to the end of December, Saturdays from March to October and Wednesday evenings from late April to the end of August. There is an active sailboard section who race on Saturdays and have an open series on Tuesday evenings, also April to August.

The Mere itself is a 100-acre stretch of water set in partially wooded countryside. The whole of the Mere is navigable, but the Club avoids the area at one end, bordered by a nature reserve where swans, geese, herons, terns and many other species of wild fowl nest and breed throughout the season. A great plus to sailors is the fact that the water level is more or less constant through the year and is unaffected by water shortages. The Mere is used solely for sailing by club members and angling, and the only motorised boats permitted are the Club’s own safety boats.

A major update to the clubhouse in 2006 means we now have excellent facilities, including new heated changing rooms and hot showers for comfortable year-round sailing.

The galley is manned on race days and serves hot meals, sandwiches, hot and cold drinks. On Sunday evenings immediately following racing the licensed bar is opened and incidents from the day’s racing are discussed and replayed at leisure!

The Club has four permanent wooden jetties providing both safe mooring and very easy access to the boats between races.

Development of youth sailing is encouraged, and several members donate their time and expertise to Junior racing and training. See our junior pages for more information. The club also supports wider youth work by making the Mere available to the Cheshire Schools Sailing and Canoeing Association outside the Club’s usual sailing times.
